Sketching in the galleries

Homer Watson, his sister Phoebe, along with those who participated in the Doon School of Fine Arts have been a source of inspiration for artists for over 125 years. The Gallery remains a space for everyone to enjoy and be inspired by the collection and exhibitions, through sketching, writing or photographing.  We respect the intellectual property rights of creators. We encourage you to do the same.

We want you to enjoy your visit. To help us manage, preserve and enable access to our collection and exhibitions legally and safely, we ask you to respect these terms when you visit the gallery rooms.

These terms provide guidance on how to photograph, film, or sketch the collections legally for non-commercial private research or study purposes of permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Non-commercial means use that is not intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or private monetary compensation.

We encourage you to share your personal experience of your visit. This may include publishing images on social media platforms. Please remember that you are responsible for making sure that any use you and others make of images or film on those platforms is consistent with the terms and conditions set out here. The Loch Doon area was memorialized in celebrated Scottish poet, Robert Burns piece “Ye banks and braes O’ bonnie Doon”

Ye banks and braes o’ bonny Doon,
How can ye bloom sae fresh and fair?
How can ye chant, ye little birds,
And I sae weary fu’ o’ care?
Thou’lt break my heart, thou warbling bird,
That wantons thro’ the flowering thorn:
Thou minds me o’ departed joys,
Departed, never to return.

Aft hae I rov’d by bonnie Doon,
To see the rose and woodbine twine;
And ilka bird sang o’ its love,
And fondly sae did I o’ mine.
Wi’ lightsome heart I pu’d a rose,
Fu’ sweet upon its thorny tree;
And my fause lover stole my rose,
But, ah! he left the thorn wi’ me.
