Blue

Connections Fibre Artists

Cayley & Watson Galleries

Blue is a universally popular colour, and one that connotes many different things to different people. On a macro level, the planet earth looks blue from space. On a micro level, blue is found throughout nature in various minerals, flowers and birds.

Connections Fibre Artists have made the decision to challenge ourselves, and delve into the colour blue to create an entire exhibition highlighting this very special corner of the colour wheel. We want to indulge ourselves in the many tones, shades and tints of each variety of this amazing colour. Ultramarine blue, indigo blue, azure blue, lapis lazuli, aqua, turquoise, Prussian blue, robin’s egg blue, sky blue, cobalt blue, sapphire blue, royal blue – the list (like the sky), seems endless. Our plan is to immerse the gallery in a sea of blues – inviting our audience to feel all the emotions that blue can create.

Even though we will all be using the colour blue, because each artist employs our own techniques, there will undoubtedly be a fascinating variety of art on display. The colour blue will unify the collection.
Connections Fibre Artists (CFA).

In the fibre art world, Connections Fibre Artists are a nationally recognized group of accomplished Canadian Fibre Artists. The group, formed in 1999, includes members who are published authors, members who show both nationally and internationally, give courses and workshops, have won major awards and are regarded as pioneers in the fibre art field. CFA members are juried into the group by invitation.

There are 23 members who each come from diverse creative backgrounds. Assorted “fibre” (cloth, paper, wood, metals, thread, cord, wire, wax and various mediums of mixed-media) are incorporated into contemporary 2-D and 3-D art works. Because the artists have signature styles, using their own combination of processes and materials, group shows are interestingly diverse.

The Loch Doon area was memorialized in celebrated Scottish poet, Robert Burns piece “Ye banks and braes O’ bonnie Doon”

Ye banks and braes o’ bonny Doon,
How can ye bloom sae fresh and fair?
How can ye chant, ye little birds,
And I sae weary fu’ o’ care?
Thou’lt break my heart, thou warbling bird,
That wantons thro’ the flowering thorn:
Thou minds me o’ departed joys,
Departed, never to return.

Aft hae I rov’d by bonnie Doon,
To see the rose and woodbine twine;
And ilka bird sang o’ its love,
And fondly sae did I o’ mine.
Wi’ lightsome heart I pu’d a rose,
Fu’ sweet upon its thorny tree;
And my fause lover stole my rose,
But, ah! he left the thorn wi’ me.
