Community Kiln Share Firing 

Max firing temperature: Cone 6, 2232°F, 1222°C  

At Homer Watson House & Gallery we are happy to share our kiln with the public! Please complete the booking request form to help us better assess your firing needs. 

How does it work? 

Booking requests are reviewed by our Kiln Technician, who will follow up by email to confirm upcoming firing opportunities and the drop off process. Exact firing dates are dependent on HWHG Programs and subject to change.  

Firing Requirements & Expectations:   

  • Our bisque firing temperatures are between cone 04-06 and our glaze firing temperatures are midrange, cone 6. *All clay and glazes used to create your work must be compatible to reach cone 6 temperature*.
  • A 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch unglazed clearance (or wax the foot) must be left at the bottom of your pottery to prevent the melting glaze from fusing pieces to the kiln shelves.
  • Homer Watson House & Gallery is a teaching and learning facility that is frequented by new pottery students from kids and adult classes. By firing with us you acknowledge that we are unable to control accidental damage incurred within the studio or in the kiln from others’ work.
  • Dryness of pots for bisque firing is at the discretion of kiln technicians
  • Damage to kiln shelves will be charged to kiln renter, $10 for glaze drips or kiln shelf replacement fee if applicable.

Specialty Firings 

For some specialty firings there may be an additional charge or details we need to know about ahead of drop off. 

Multiple Small Pieces  

For pieces 2 in × 2 in or under.

Let us know if you’ll be bringing a large amount of small pieces, like magnets or beads. It will take a longer time to load and unload the kiln, so we need to adjust the price a little to reflect this. Thanks. 

Charge $5 once per booking, before rental tax — not per shelf or piece. 

Specialized Kiln Furniture 

If your work requires specialized kiln furniture, like hanging rods or stilts, you are required to provide them.   

Odd-Shaped Pieces 

Please let us know if you are bringing a piece that is large and unusually shaped. This will allow us to plan how to load the kiln around the piece. Please see ‘Kiln Info’ to measure how many shelves (space in the kiln) you’ll need to accommodate the larger piece.
