Position Title: Summer Camp Leader 

Position Summary 

Do you love working with children and have a passion for art? As a Camp Leader, you will be working in the studio helping HWHG deliver art programming to children aged 4-11. You will be an integral part of making our art programs a creative, fun, and inclusive environment for all! 

Contract length: 12 weeks 
Expected start & end date: June 15, 2026 – September 4, 2026. Applicants must be available for the full contract length. 
Job Types: Full-time, Contract 
Salary: $18.50 per hour 

About Us 

Homer Watson House & Gallery is the oldest operating art gallery in Ontario and one of the oldest galleries in Canada.  Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Homer Watson’s creative spirit by stimulating the appreciation, enjoyment, and practice of the visual arts. 

Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Welcoming and greeting parents and children to camp each day. 
  • Planning, preparing, and facilitating 2-5 art lessons per week for children between the ages of 4 and 11.  
  • Studio maintenance. Preparing studio spaces for lessons including gathering supplies, taking stock of inventory, tidying and resetting studios after lessons. 
  • Child supervision during the hours of camp. Monitoring and engaging campers during art activities, morning drop-off, sign-out, breaks, lunch time, along with afternoon extended care and pick-up.  Ensuring safety for all participants at all times. 
  • Recording and documenting the progress of camp participants to regularly communicate with parents at pick-up time. 
  • Collaboratively prepare and install an exhibition of student artwork at the end of each camp week. 

Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Previous experience teaching/instructing/facilitating art or arts related subjects to children ages 4-11. 
  • Enjoy working with children. 
  • Have strong communication skills. 
  • Have a passion for visual art or arts related subjects. 
  • Work well as a team. 
  • Have a good understanding of HWHG and what we do. 
  • Are willing to learn new skills. 
  • Education/ECE training and working with children is an asset. 
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in arts programming including supervising groups of children in a camp or program setting. 
  • Keen and enthusiastic attitude and approach to children, parents and arts programming. 
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills. 

Requirements 

  • Actively pursuing a college diploma or university degree in the Arts, Education or Recreation and Leisure or another related field. 
  • Previous experience working with children. 
  • Standard First Aid. 
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check. 

This is a grant funded position. Applicants must meet the following criteria: 

  • Must be currently enrolled in a secondary, or post-secondary institution or within six months of graduation. Proof of enrollment must be provided. 
  • Between the ages of 15-25 years old upon commencement of employment or up to 29 years of age for persons with a disability, within the meaning of s.10 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.19, as amended from time to time. 
  • Available to work full time for the duration of the contract length. 
  • Students must be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN).

Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal record check dated within the last 30 days as a condition of employment. Letters of application should address the candidate’s expertise in arts programming for children & youth. 

Mandatory Training Dates: 

Applicants must be available during the mandatory training period listed to be considered for this position or must give advanced notice and adequate reasoning as to why they are unable to attend training. Training for this position will take place from Monday, June 16 to Friday, June 27, 2025 – Monday to Fridays, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. This training period is crucial and ensures all camp staff are properly trained and prepared for facilitating camp programming.
